The report aims to present the result of the work conducted in task 6.5 (Future of scholarly writing in SSH) in the OPERAS-P (Open Scholarly Communication in the European Research Area for Social Sciences and Humanities – Preparation) project. The introduction puts forward a theoretical understanding of scholarly writing -- especially in the context of the digital age -- that underlines our research. In the literature review we address the state of the art in a reflection on the role of technology in scholarly communication. Through the interpretation of interviews with scholars we reconstruct contemporary communication practices in SSH. The analysis of case studies provides ideas on how technology is responding to those needs. Finally, we present two conceptual prototypes (the living book and the digital scholarly edition) that could address some of the needs and be proposed as future services for OPERAS.
