Description

Data and software for "Saving space for dinner: no-take reserves and sustainable hunting in data-sparse tropical forests" (in preparation).

This repository includes software used to simulate harvest outcomes of alternative spatial management strategies in a Malaysian Borneo context. Spatially and temporally dynamic harvest models (which include movements of hunters and their game) were created in Julia software to assess the ability of spatial reserves to maximize two objectives: 1) population density of three targeted example species (bearded pig, Sus barbatus; yellow muntjac, Muntiacus atherodes; and lesser Malay chevrotain and Tragulus kanchil), and 2) multispecies harvested biomass. Simulations represent different possible spatial- and temporal management strategies (including 0-4 no-take reserves which are either statically closed through time or periodically open/close through time).

Brief file descriptions (full details, including column names and descriptions and data dictionaries can be found in the associated README)

Data files

  1. Deithetal_SavingSpaceDinner2021_NonSensitivitySimResults.csv: a csv of all simulation outcomes except for sensitivity test (i.e., base case simulations)
  2. Deithetal_SavingSpaceDinner2021_GRAVITYSensitivitySimResults.csv: a csv of simulation results for sensitivity tests where hunters ignore game density (i.e., prey gravity = 0)
  3. Deithetal_SavingSpaceDinner2021_ACCESSSensitivitySimResults.csv: a csv of simulation results for sensitivity tests where hunters ignore cost of travel while foraging (i.e., accessibility is uniform across the hunting catchment)
  4. Deithetal_SavingSpaceDinner2021_DISPERSALSensitivitySimResults.csv: a csv of simulation results for sensitivity tests where mammals exhibit decreased dispersal from their natal cell (i.e., either limited juvenile dispersal or limited dispersal of adults within home ranges).

Simulation files (within simulationCode.zip)

  1. HarvestReserveSimulator/: a folder containing a Julia package, called by runBlockedSimulations.jl, which describes harvest and population dynamics functions.
  2. inputData/: a folder containing necessary 2D array inputs in the form of csv files. These arrays are flattened representations of necessary spatial data (i.e., reserve placement, land cover types, and hunter accessibility)
  3. runBlockedSimulations.jl: a Julia script which calls functions in HarvestReserveSimulator using data from inputData to simulate harvest and population dynamics in a spatially controlled harvest system.
