Wikidata Notes for Bat Collectors

  • 1. Independent Researcher

Description

The document summarises a presentation given to participants at a workshop on bat biodiversity data. It takes readers through the process of logging into Wikidata, how to create a new item for a scientific collector, how to add appropriately referenced statements to that Wikidata item including statements concerning unique identifiers relating to the scientific collector. It suggests an ontology for scientific collector Wikidata items, illustrates how to add the scientific collector Wikidata item to Bionomia.net and then gives practical examples upon which to use this workflow. The document goes on to give examples of Wikidata queries that can be undertaken once the appropriate data is added to Wikidata as well as showcase the Scholia profile tool.

The presentation covered by this document was recorded in a YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYvoXKBSGA8

This presentation came from a workshop as part of a NSF Grant "Rapid Creation of a Data Product for the World's Specimens of Horseshoe Bats and Relatives, a Known Reservoir for Coronaviruses" and work from this grant is in Zenodo at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4416152
