Description

The Print Screen Function on a Keyboard, also known as Prscr, PRTSC, PrtScrn, Prt Scrn, PrntScrn, or Ps/SR, is a keyboard key found on most computer keyboards. Depending on the operating system or running software, pressing the key transfers the current screen picture to the machine clipboard or the printer. The Print Screen key is the top-left key of the control keys in the picture.

Where is the Print Screen key on the keyboard?

The Print Screen key, like the other control keys on the keyboard, is labelled with one of the abbreviations mentioned earlier. A computer keyboard is shown below, with the Print Screen key outlined in blue.

This method takes a screenshot and allows you to paste it into an image editor such as Paint or Paint 3D where you can edit it.

Step #1

Press the [Prt Sc] key.

Step #2

Open the Start menu and type in “Paint 3D” (or the name of the image editing app you wish to use. Then click on it to open that program.

Step #3

Press the [V] key and the [Ctrl] key at the same time to paste your screenshot into the app. Now you can edit your screenshot. Just make sure that you save before closing the program. You can also directly paste the screenshot into documents without editing it since it is stored temporarily on the clipboard.

Screen, Window and Selected Capture

A laptop may give you three different ways to capture the screen. A full screen capture saves the whole screen, such as what happens when you press PrtScn. A window capture gets only what’s in a particular window you select, not the whole screen. A selected capture lets you draw a selection area on the screen and the laptop "grabs" what’s inside the area. For example, the Snip & Sketch app, described below, has options to selectively copy a part of the screen.

Windows Laptop Print Screen

To take a screenshot of the whole screen on a Windows laptop press the Windows logo (⊞) and PrtScn keys at the same time, as mentioned above. For Windows laptops with no PrtScn key, press Fn, the ⊞ key and Space Bar to take a screenshot. By default, Windows puts screenshot files in a directory called Screenshots, located in your Pictures folder.
