Modelling Global Change: Land Use and Fire
Description
Presented in the King's College London Department of Geography Research Seminar Series on 3 February 2021.
Abstract: Land use and fire are integral to many aspects of global environmental change. Much of my past research has used modelling to examine these issues at what might be termed 'landscape scales' on the order of 100s of sq km, but more recently I've been involved in projects that model human-driven change across much broader extents. In this seminar I discuss two of those projects and the challenges faced in moving between the scales. One project examines land use change in Brazil as driven by international demand for agricultural commodities. The other aims to improve the representation of anthropogenic fire in dynamic global vegetation models.
