Amblyomma rhinocerotis

Description

105. Amblyomma rhinocerotis (De Geer, 1778).

An Afrotropical species whose adults are usually found on Perissodactyla: Rhinocerotidae. Adults alone have been collected from Artiodactyla: Hippopotamidae and Suidae, Carnivora: Felidae, Perissodactyla: Rhinocerotidae, and rarely from Squamata: Pythonidae, and Testudines (unknown family). There are no records of Amblyomma rhinocerotis causing human parasitism.

M: De Geer (1778), under the name Acarus rhinocerotis and given its current status in Koch (1844a)

F: Neumann (1899), under the name Amblyomma aureum, a synonym of Amblyomma rhinocerotis

Note: Guglielmone and Nava (2014) noted several instances where specimens redescribed as Amblyomma rhinocerotis were actually confused with Dermacentor rhinocerinus and vice versa.
