Description
Aloë perfoliata Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 319. 1753.
"Habitat in Aethiopia." RCN: 2511.
Lectotype (Reynolds, Aloes S. Africa: 89, f. 69. 1950): Herb. Linn. No. 442.1 (LINN).
Generitype of Aloë Linnaeus (vide Hitchcock, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 146. 1929).
Current name: Aloë perfoliata L. (Liliaceae / Asphodelaceae).
Note: The lectotype, while clearly an Aloë, apparently cannot be identified to species. Wijnands (Bot. Commelins: 124. 1983) provided current names for each unnamed variety listed in the original description, as did Newton (in Eggli, Ill. Handb. Succ. Pl., Monocots: 133. 2001). The latter appears to treat this name as synonymous with A. ferox Mill.
