Description
Agrostis capillaris Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 62. 1753.
"Habitat in Europae pratis." RCN: 540.
Lectotype (Widén, Fl. Fennica 5: 65, f. 27. 1971): Herb. A. van Royen No. 912.356-69, left specimen (L).
Current name: Agrostis capillaris L. (Poaceae).
Note: Problems with the identity of some of the material associated with this name led some authors (e.g. Malte in Ann. Rep. Natl. Mus. Canada 50: 116. 1928; Rauschert in Feddes Repert. 88: 318. 1977) to treat it as ambiguous. However, Widén’s typification has established the usage of the name and seems to have been accepted by later authors. See detailed reviews by Widén (l.c.: 68-71) and Edgar & Forde (in New Zealand J. Bot. 29: 154. 1991).
