Ethical considerations around data sharing

  • 1. FORS - Swiss Centre of Expertise in the Social Sciences

Description

Alexandra Stam, from FORS, presented ethical considerations around data sharing. She first explained the differences between ethical and legal obligations. She then described the main regulating frameworks, which consist in requirements made by ethical committees, as well as discipline-specific recommendations in the form of codes of ethics and international guidelines. She then discussed the ethics of data sharing by presenting the ethical grounds in favor and against ethical sharing. Finally, she reminded the audience of the main ethical practices to protect research participants - that are informed consent, anonymization and access control – and how these can be combined for better protection.

The presentation was delivered at "Data management for open science" workshop, held on 4th December 2019 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb (FFZG), Croatia, during the first official presentation of CROSSDA, the Croatian Social Science Data Archive as a national public service and service provider for CESSDA ERIC.
