Description
Ecology Project ‘Progetto Ecologia’ (1985)
The research involved approximately 2500 students, 50 teachers and 15 principals from 15 senior high schools in Rome (I, III, V, IX and XI districts) and 1 at Pomezia. The "Ecology Project", over the whole 1984/85 school year analysed two aspects of the industrial civilization: (i) the final uses of energy in private houses, that is familiar uses, including final uses in the respective building types; and (ii) urban pollution monitoring gases (CO, NOx, and SO2), rain (pH and dust), and the health conditions of two key species of the urban vegetation, stone (Pinus pinea L.) and maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aiton), and evergreen oak (Quercus ilex L.).
The final uses of energy have been surveyed by means of 4,000 interviews based on special questionnaires in sample city districts: (a) one 33-questions inquiry form for final uses, and (b) a 102-questions for building types. These questionnaires were aimed at identifying the inhabitants' attitude to change: 4000 questionnaires of type (a) and 300 of type (b) were collected.
The first part on energy was completed at the beginning of January 1985 when, concomitantly, started the second part on urban ecology over 26 monitoring points.
