Description
Supplementary data accompanying paper Heine et al., Kinematics of the South Atlantic rift, Solid Earth, 2013
The supplementary data contains 3 directories with geospatial data to be used in GPlates as well as high resolution figures of the maps in the paper.
Directory structure:
- Fig3_ProfileData: Data used to generate Fig. 3 (Continental margin cross sections and area balanced sections). Each profile is available as SHP file and GMT plain text file.
- PaleoTectonicReconstructions: This directory contains reconstruction maps at 1 Myr spacing in Adobe PDF format with Africa fixed in present day coordinates.
- PlateModel: Feature data and rotation model for use in the GPlates plate tectonic reconstruction software. Contains rotation file, plate polygons, filtered FA gravity and flowlines in *.shp, *.gpml and *.rot format. Please refer to the readme file in the PlateModel directory for details.
Files:
- Heine_et_al_SupplementaryData1_BasinKinematics.pdf: Mercator projection maps showing the computed amount of extension for individual rift basin segments for the key deforming zones used in the plate kinematic model. PDF format. For details please refer to the readme section in the PDF.
- Heine_et_al_SouthAtlantic_SupplementaryData_QGISv2.qgs: A QGIS project file containing the geospatial data of the plate model. Double click to open in QGIS. QGIS is an open-source Geographic Information System and available for most operating systems.

Display the data in GPlates
==============================================================================
Download the open source GPlates software for different OS from
http://www.gplates.org
1. Fire up GPlates.
2. Drag all *.shp files and the *.gpml file into the GPlates main window
(you can also load them under File-> Open feature collection).
3. Add the *.rot file.
4. Play.
