Rethinking English vowel alternation

  • 1. Cornell University

Description

This paper addresses the classic problem of vowel alternation in the English lexicon.

It argues that, at least for the Latinate portion of the grammar, this alternation might be better regarded as determined by a constraint-based lengthening process rather than shortening, as is traditionally assumed.
