Description

Objectives: Managing of diabetes using medicinal plants is a supportive therapy for better glycemic control with lesser side effects. The present study investigated the anti-diabetic effect of Delonix regia (DR) leaves extract in alloxan induced type-2 diabetic rats. Methods: Sprague Dawley rats of either sex were used. Type-2 diabetes was induced by a single dose of IP injection of alloxan (150mg/kg) in rats and was divided into 5 groups of 6 animals each. Ethanolic extract of leaves from Delonix regia (DR 500 and 1000mg/kg) and glibenclamide (10mg/kg) were orally administered once daily for 21 days in the treatment and standard group respectively. Blood glucose levels and body weight were measured on initial day and final day of oral treatment. At the end of the treatment rats were sacrificed and blood samples were collected for the estimation of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoproteins (LDL), high density lipoproteins (HDL), S. creatinine, SGPT and SGOT levels. Results: After 21 days treatment period, DR extract improved the fasting blood glucose level very highly significantly (p<0.001) at 1000mg/kg b.w. as compared to the diabetic control group. The DR extract significantly lowered TC (p<0.001) and TG (p<0.001) level, insignificantly reduced LDL-C level and improved HDL-C insignificantly in hyperglycemic animals. Oral administration of DR significantly reduced the SGPT (p<0.05), SGOT (p<0.01) and serum creatinine (p<0.001) levels when compared to the vehicle treated diabetic control group. The standard drug (glibenclamide) showed significant effect (p<0.001) on all the parameters. Conclusion: Our investigations suggested that ethanolic extract of Delonix regia leaves has anti-diabetic properties. Further studies are required to investigate the mechanisms of this effect.
