THE PRESIDENT'S PALACE OF THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA

Description

The project of current the President’s Palace of the Republic of Moldova (former the Soviet Supreme of Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic) was realized in 1980–1985 by architects Yuri Tumanyan, Arcady Zaltsman, Victor Iavorski and engineer Anatoly Liutîi. From a constructive point of view, it is an edifice designed from three blocks including the vertical core and two lower side annexes. The President’s Palace of the Republic of Moldova represents one of the first Moldovan buildings built in the postmodernist style. However, the authors of the project appealed not only to postmodernist models, but also to the national architectural and decorative patrimony (“stone flower”), using some stylized elements of the classical orders (pilasters, denticulated cornices, etc.), of the Caucasian architecture (“glhatun” or “darbazi” cover’s system, etc.) and the interwar architecture (cassette ceilings, etc.).
This building is an important urban accent in the historical center of Chisinău and monument, which is readily recognizable bythe inhabitants of Chişinău, the capital’s guests and foreign tourists.
