George W. Davison: a collector at the service of education
Description
George W. Davison (1872-1953) was an American banker and collector who dedicated his life to creating a collection of 6000 prints that represents the origin of the Davison Art Center, the Museum of Wesleyan University, in Middletown (CT). The decision of donating his whole collection to his alma mater was taken well before the end of his life. This shows us the special role of someone that collected with the aim of generating a collection that could benefit the students, sometimes even regardless of his personal interests. Through George W. Davison we find out the importance that collectors or concrete benefactors have in the formation of a university collection and its subsequent use by all the academic community. We are not referring to the institution as a collector itself, but to an individual that enables the connections University-museum/ University-art market.

Spanish abstract: George W. Davison (1872-1953) fue un banquero y coleccionista americano, que dedicó su vida a la creación de una colección de 6000 estampas que hoy constituye el origen del Davison Art Center, museo de Wesleyan University, en Middletown (CT). La decisión de donar toda su colección a la que había sido su Universidad, fue tomada mucho antes del final de su vida.
Encontrándonos ante el rol de quien reúne obras con el fin de generar una colección que, además, beneficie a los estudiantes, por encima incluso de intereses personales. A través de George W. Davison descubrimos la importancia que un coleccionista o benefactor concreto puede tener en la formación de una colección universitaria, y su consiguiente aprovechamiento por toda la comunidad educativa. No estamos hablando de la universidad como coleccionista, sino de un individuo que dota a una institución de enseñanza de la posibilidad de que las conexiones universidad-museo / universidad-mercado del arte puedan establecerse.
