Description

According to: Peter Maxwell Davies "The well-known Ave Maris Stella plainsong forms the backbone of the music... “projected” through the magic Square of the Moon". David Roberts offers an explanation of how the Moon magic square is used. In this talk we give an introduction to magic squares and show how it is the permutation define by a row of the "Moon" magic square is used as a permutation in the composition of Davies' Ave Maris Stella opus 63.

Notes

This meeting was a celebration of Peter Maxwell Davies 70th birthday. After Lionheart's talk Davies gave a reply in which he agreed with the interpretation that it was the permutation from the magic square that was used, rather in manor of bell ringing.
