Description

Ukrainian folk singing polyphony as a factor of choral thinking of Stepan Degtyarev and his contemporaries

The issue of the impact of such folk traditions as inner-voice texture, cantus and lyre player, on the musical language of outstanding Ukrainian composers of the end of XVII – beginning of XIX centuries has been multiply brought up in scientific literature; but it has never become a subject of a special theoretical research from the perspective of performance of non-imitative – folk – polyphony till now. Hence the goal of the article – is to take one of first steps in that direction by means of generalization of comparative observations polyphonic features (in particular, voice-leading which is inner-voice in practice) based on S. Degtyarev, A. Vedel and D. Bortnyansky’s sacred concerts. It should be pointed out that what is meant here is non-imitative polyphony principles. S. Degtyarev’s ‘theoretical mistakes’, inexplicable from classical harmony’s point of view, were considered before as a wrong composer’s voice-leading, but as a matter of fact they reflect maestro’s profound thinking principles. Gradual changing and expending of a research perspective by means of attracting analytical methods of non-imitative polyphony will give a real possibility to make good progress in understanding and explanation of the origin of similar concinnous phenomena in the composer’s scores.

Immediate comparison of climax sections of S. Degtyarev’s and D. Bortnyansky’s cognominal concerts «It’s a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord» in both cases confirm obvious presence of a profound structural formula in the form of function alteration of the I-st and V-th degrees on the dominant chord, which is suggested to be considered as a bourdon concealed model of a folk polyphony: stretched at D. Bortnuansky’s score and repeated at S. Degtyarev’s one (according to I. Pyaskovsky’s terminology). Specific features of the revealed model are typological for lyre player’s chants also. Besides, S. Degtyarev uses the device of a varied unison doubling of two texture layers moving in a parallel tertian duplication; consequently, continuous parallelisms of octaves and fifths (appropriate to that type of a variant-background polyphony) are inevitable by definition.

There should be also added several observations made on the base of comparison analogous climax sections from S. Degtyarev’s and A. Vegel’s sacred concerts «O God, the heathen are come into thine inheritance». The usage of the same techniques even with similar signs of infinite canon sets wondering. Cadence choral unison, typical for folk polyphony that A. Vedel used as a final part of a concert section also draws attention.

To the most important typological characteristics of both inner-voice texture and chant folk polyphonies there should be relegated three-part texture with exact subordination of the correlation of texture voices, which can be seen in their differentiation in functions, that is stratification into leading, duplicating and accompanying voices. What is more, the function of the leading voice is variable, migrating. Parallelism and equirythm – two essential typological features of national Ukrainian polyphony – cause natural formation of parallelisms of perfect intervals and common chords. The comparison of folk Ukrainian polyphony with professional European counterpoint system, with all existing essential differences between them, even if it’s possible, that’s first of all in the sphere of not even imitative counterpoint, but of allowing duplication, what is more – in the form of simultaneous sound of initial and derived connection; whereby with the direct voice moving there appear natural parallelisms of fifths and octaves.

Non-standard voice leading in the samples from S. Degtyarev’s concerts becomes explicable while considering it as the main two-part texture, going with its derived variant in duplication of the upper third (of one upper voice or both voices). The stratification of the upper pair of voices is typical for S. Degtyarev and D. Bortnyansky, meanwhile free thickening of any tessitura pair is proper for A. Vedel; though the stratification of men choral group associates with singing traditions of The Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

Realizing the importance of a folk constituent in all its diverse forms and using non-imitative polyphony methods while analyzing S. Degtyarev’s and his contemporaries’ works can gain a better understanding of the principles of choral thinking of classicism epoch Ukrainian composers’ and thus are extremely relevant objective of modern music studies.
