'Paul und Fritz' – Zur Freundschaft von Paul Klee mit dem Nervenarzt Fritz Lotmar

Creators

Description

The neuropsychiatrist Fritz Lotmar (1878 - 1964) was one of Klee’s most important friends. Against the background of his bio- graphy, the stages in the friendship that be- gan in the early years in Berne (1890 – 1908) and ended with Klee’s death in 1940 are pre- sented and discussed – the early years they shared in Berne, their meeting in Munich (1908), their reunion in Berne, after they left Germany in 1933/34, Lotmar as a collector of Paul Klee’s works. Interest is focused both on Lotmar himself and his wife Olga, his father Philipp Lotmar and the children Walter, Ruth and Paula. This relationship with Klee is seen against the background of Lotmar‘s rank as an outstanding scientist – his comprehensive neurological training, his activity as a clinician and researcher in Munich and Berne, his publications on the subject of aphasia (inability to speak) and his importance as a scholar, neverthe- less, he never became a tenured professor. Finally, the question is discussed to what extent medical knowledge has found its way into the work of his friend Paul Klee.
