Ludwig Hohl - zur Philosophie der Notizen
Description
This study provides an essential examination of Ludwig Hohl's work Die Notizen (The Notes). It demonstrates in what ways an adequate philosophical approach can correct and complement the existing research, which studied The Notes mainly from the perspective of a literary work. However, this study does not aspire to investigate the alleged philosophical content of the Notes. On the contrary: in light of what this study proves is Hohl's guiding conception of philosophy – an active and methodological shaping of one's life – any substance-orientated philosophical analysis seems inappropriate and thus misleading. Pivotal for the argument are the extensive and still largely unknown materials from Hohl's estate in the Swiss Literary Archive (SLA).
The first chapter dismantles selected stereotypes of the 'enfant terrible'. In return, it puts to the fore evidence for a highly regulated and self-disciplined way of living of the 'écrivain-philosophe'. Moreover, the chapter demonstrates the need for a far-reaching expansion of the concept of a (literary) 'work'. The claim is that not only literary production in the classical sense, but every vital impulse of the author must be considered as part of his 'work'. On the basis of these corrections, Hohl appears to be an exemplary author of a philosophical practice, whose place must be taken up by the reader if he or she seriously wants to get involved with Hohl's philosophical appeal.
The second chapter contains a close analysis of selected aspects of existing research on the Notes. The focus lies in a well-founded critique of a widespread psychological reductionism in major Hohl studies and a decided refutation of the connected reproach of Hohl's subjectivism. Furthermore, existing patterns regarding Hohl's classification in the history of philosophy and history of ideas are critically challenged and refuted.
The question of Hohl's intellectual provenance is further examined in a first digression on the significance of Baruch de Spinoza. The digression demonstrates that the core of Hohl's enthusiasm for kin thinkers does not constitute far-reaching theoretical agreements on central philosophemes, but instead his grand admiration for the radical conversion of their philosophical awareness in the conduct of their lives.
A second digression focusses on the apparent difficulties with Hohl's claim of unity and structure in the Notes. It is argued that – an appropriately extended concept of 'work' presupposed – Hohl's claim must be understood and can be justified. At this point and with regression to the 'Grundmanuskript', the study provides a first insight into the protracted genesis and complex "genome" of the Notes.
The third chapter examines Ludwig Hohl's ambivalent understanding of philosophy. In his school essays, the college student distinguishes two distinct ways of thinking that the writer of the Notes still clearly holds apart: a positive appreciation of philosophy, understood as a practical art of living and an integral part of art rather than science, as opposed to a negative appreciation of philosophy, appearing as an alienated logic and purely theoretical construction of systems of thought. A glimpse into Hohl's correspondence with the Swiss philosopher Hans F. Geyer confirms – Hohl's own assumption – that central elements of this positive understanding of philosophy clearly lead back to ancient philosophy.
Against the background of Pierre Hadot's concept of 'exercise spirituel', the fourth chapter of this study connects its different insights to a synopsis of the philosophical dimension of the note work. From a philosophical perspective, the chapter proposes new solutions for the three major problems of (literary) research on Hohl's Notes: the questions of unity, structure and literary genre. More than this, in light of the proposed philosophical approach, Hohl's elsewise bizarre-seeming dream journals, his 'culture physique' and his astonishing self-logging-practice have a clear and sober function.
