GDPR Alignment with Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) and ISO/IEC 27701: A Cross-Framework Data Protection Report

This report analyses the alignment between the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) and ISO/IEC 27701, the privacy information management extension to ISO/IEC 27001. It examines the EU-Japan mutual adequacy decision, the substantial convergence and remaining gaps between GDPR and APPI on lawful processing, individual rights and cross-border transfer, the supplementary rules Japan implemented to address EU concerns, and the role of ISO/IEC 27701 as an implementation framework for operationalising both regimes. The report covers governance and compliance, data-subject rights, cross-border transfer mechanisms and technical security controls, providing organisations operating across the EU and Japan with a structured basis for a single, harmonised privacy programme.
