Description

The current study has been achieved to clarify the prenatal histological changes associated with the morphogenesis of the uterine cervix of the dromedary camel with special reference to the morphological evidence of epithelio-mesenchymal interaction. The cervical segment could be recognized for the first time at the 135 mm stage as a thickened area between the most caudal portion of the uterine body and the vaginal canal. The luminal surface was highly undulant, its epithelial lining was generally of the pseudostratified columnar. The myogenic zone was characteristically wider and formed of many small isolated interrupted bundles of smooth myocytes with circular orientation. At 640 mm CVRL stage on, folding and branching of the cervical mucosa into primary, secondary and tertiary orders as a result of the progressive inward protrusion of the folds. At the end of the prenatal stages, the cervical musculosa became composed of spirally disposed smooth muscle bundles which were separated by appreciable amount of fibrocellular stromal elements. In some areas, the musculosa was differentiated into an inner and outer longitudinal layer sandwiching a middle circular one.
