La description double dans le roman français des Lumières, 1760-1800

Abstract: The subject of this work is the theory and practice of descriptive writing in the French novel of the Age of Enlightenment, more precisely during the period from 1760 to 1800. The goal is to give clearer contours to this neglected but important chapter in the history of the description in the novel. With this goal in mind, three central problems of description are discussed: the concept of description and its status in the novel; the techniques of its inclusion in the narrative context; and its relationship to painting and the techniques of literary production of visual clarity. The work is based on a comprehensive analysis of a corpus of 30 novels, published between 1760 and 1800.

Zusammenfassung: Gegenstand der Arbeit ist die Theorie und Praxis der Beschreibung im französischen Roman der Epoche der Aufklärung, genauer in der Zeit von 1760 bis 1800. Ihr Ziel ist es, einem wenig beachteten, aber wichtigen Abschnitt in der Geschichte der Beschreibung im Roman Kontur zu geben. Mit diesem Ziel werden drei zentrale Problematiken der Beschreibung erörtert: der Begriff der Beschreibung, ihr Status und die Techniken ihrer Eingliederung in den narrativen Kontext sowie ihre Beziehung zur Malerei und die Techniken einer literarischen Herstellung von bildlicher Anschaulichkeit. Die Arbeit stützt sich auf die umfassende Analyse eines Korpus von 30 Romanen, die zwischen 1760 und 1800 veröffentlicht wurden.

Résumé: L’objet de cet ouvrage est la théorie et la pratique de la description dans le roman français des Lumières, plus précisément entre 1760 et 1800. Son objectif est de donner du relief à un épisode négligé quoiqu’important de l’histoire de la description romanesque. Dans cette perspective, trois enjeux de la description sont analysés : la notion de description, son statut et les techniques de son intégration dans le contexte narratif ainsi que sa relation à la peinture et les techniques de la production littéraire d’une évidence visuelle. L’étude se fonde sur l’analyse d’un corpus de trente romans publiés entre 1760 et 1800.
