Description

This GIS dataset was created for the following scientific publication, as part of the EU-funded Cool Schools research project (under Grant Agreement No. 101003758) : Gallez, E., Canters, F., Gadeyne, S., & Baró, F. (2024). A multi-indicator distributive justice approach to assess school-related green infrastructure benefits in Brussels - ScienceDirect. Ecosystem Services, 70, 101677. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecoser.2024.101677.

The point layer (Schools_mainentrances_brussels_VUB_Z.shp) includes :

  • the location of almost all primary schools in the Brussels-Capital Region (n=408) ;
  • administrative data such as the school name, education level provided (pre-school/primary/secondary), school type (public/charter/private), language community (french or dutch speaking...) ;
  • socio-economic data on the enrolled students' household (e.g., income or education level of parents) ;
  • involvement in (schoolyard) greening projects ;
  • environmental indicators such as the percentage of vegetation cover in the schoolyard or in the school surroundings (e.g., street trees, accessible public green spaces, vegetation cover in 300m buffer) ;
  • and others.

The polygon layer (Schoolyards_brussels_VUB_Z.shp) includes:

  • the schoolyard boundaries of almost all primary schools in the Brussels-Capital Region (n=408) - obtained by removing the buildings from the schools cadaster parcels based on data from UrbIS-P&B (Paradigm, 2015b) ;
  • the schoolyard surface (in m2) ;
  • the school names and ID numbers.

More detailed information on the field names and description are to be found in : READMETABLE_Primary_Schools_Data_VUB_Z.xlsx
