Description

This data set contains removal rates of cow dung on all BETA-FOR patches measured in spring and late summer 2023. Cow dung samples were placed on the patches in pairs, where one sample was accessible to all invertebrate detritivores (insect_exclusion = False) and the other sample was enclosed by an insect net, preventing access for detritivors larger than 1mm (insect_exclusion = True).

Variables Description
################

*patchLabel_BETAFOR: unique BETA-FOR patch label

*patch: patch number

*subpatch: ID of subpatch located on the patch

*substrate_type: type of sample used, CD = cow dung

*dungID: unique ID for each cow dung collection. Cow dung for this experiment was collected from cows at Naturlandhof Peter (Schwebheim, Germany).

*insect_exclusion: True = sample was covered by an insect net, False = sample was accessible for insects

*start_date: start date of exposure of the sample to patch conditions

*weight_start_wet: wet weight of sample at the start of the exposure

*weight_start_dry: estimated dry weight of sample at the start of the exposure. Dry weight was estimated using wet to dry ratios of 5 control samples for each dungID.

*end_date: end date of exposure of the sample to patch conditions

*weight_end_wet: wet weight of sample at the end of the exposure

*weight_end_dry: dry weight of sample at the end of the exposure. Samples were dried at 100 °C for 5 days.

*exposure_time: number of days the samples were exposed to patch conditions

*removal_rate: (weight_start_dry - weight_end_dry )/ weight_start_dry

*removal_rate_day: ((weight_start_dry - weight_end_dry ) / weight_start_dry) / exposure_time

*year: year in which the experiment took place

*season: season in which the experiment took place. Removal rates were measured twice, once in spring and once in late summer.

*notes: observations relevant for data analysis

*data_collector: person collecting the data and supervising field work teams
