Description

ABSTRACT

Statins are an established class of drugs with proven efficacy in cardiovascular risk reduction. The disquite over statin safety was first raised with the reports of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis. Atorvastatin is one of the most widely prescribed statin in the world. It is therefore important to know the dose-related vastness of effect of atorvastatin on blood lipids. According to previous articles, data collected on atorvastatin, it is a new 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor, indicates that it has superior activity in treating a variety of dyslipidemic disorders  characterized by elevations in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and :or triglycerides. As a result, a wide therapeutic gap exists between target LDL-C levels. A recent and more effective approach used for treating for hyperlipidemias, by administering a novel agent inhibiting cholesterol absorption, with a atrovastatin, which inhibits cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver. Statins are safe and well tolerated including more recent potent statins such as, atorvastatin. The benefits of concerted statin use in cardiovascular risk reduction greatly outweigh risks. The current review discusses latent causes of statin- associated adverse effects including management in high risk groups.

KEYWORDS: Statins, Atorvastatin, HMG COA Reductase inhibitors, LDL-C, cholesterol absorption.
