Particle position output from the FLEXPART dispersion model for a test case for use with the WaterSip moisture source diagnostic
Description
This dataset contains configuration files and model output to test with the Lagrangian moisture source and transport diagnostic WaterSip in version 3.2.
A first set of files comprises individual particle output in shortposit files from the Lagrangian particle transport model FLEXPART in version 10.4. This simulation has been set up for the time period 15 July to 15 August 2022 with ERA5 reanalysis data. The atmosphere has been discretized into 10 million air parcels, each of them with a mass given in the part_mass file. The FLEXPART code to generate the particle output in FORTRAN90 is provided to enable conducting similar FLEXPART runs.
A second set of files comprises the setup of a test case for the WaterSip diagnostic. A configuration file is provided which sets up a domain over Scandinavia (54-71ºN, 4-32ºE), and runs an analysis for the time period 05 to 15 August 2022. Additional input files for the topography and land sea mask required by WaterSip are provided in netCDF format. The output files from running WaterSip with this setup are alos provided (Scandinavia_2022_global_6h.tar).
A bash shell script (get_all_files.sh) is provided that facilitates downloading and extractring this dataset, and organizing all items in a suitable directory structure to run the test case described in Sodemann (2025). You only need to download this script and run it with argument 'get' to create the test setup.
If the setup has to be done manually, the content of this archive needs to be downloaded, the tar file needs to be extracted, and all files need to be arranged in the following directory structure:
./INPUT_WATERSIP.Scandinavia_2022_global_6h
./static/etopo5.nc
./static/ERA_sea_mask_inv.nc
./input/partposit_*
./output/
The WaterSip code needs to be downloaded from a separate repository at https://git.app.uib.no/GFI-public/watersip into a folder watersip_main.
