Methods

Bee data. Solitary bee distribution data within California were obtained from three sources.  The first source was the Bee Library (library.big-bee.net), an online repository of digitized bee specimens compiled by the Big Bee project, which is a collaboration between 13 universities, research stations, natural history collections, and agencies based in the United States (Seltmann et al., 2021).  The second source was a publicly available, cleaned and standardized dataset (6.9 million occurrences) that sourced data from (i) the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), (ii) Symbiota Collections of Arthropods Network (SCAN), (iii) Integrated Digitized Biocollections (iDigBio), (iv) the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and (v) the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA), as well as private collections and data available in the literature.  Details of these data can be found in Dorey et al.  (2023).  The third source of specimen data was the USDA-ARS Pollinating Insects Research Unit, which maintains a database of their collection as well as bees collected in projects where they did the identifications.  This resulted in a data set of over 480,000 occurrences from 1782 bee species in California.
