Copper River Salmon Migration Data, AKSSF 2021

#Synopsis

There are indicators that sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) of the Copper River, 
an important population that supports subsistence fisheries in southcentral Alaska, is 
subjected to elevated inriver mortality during their spawning migration that may be 
linked to climate change. This mortality has implications for maintaining upriver 
escapement levels, representing a fundamental challenge to the management of 
subsistence fisheries in this region. This project will evaluate how changing body 
size, condition, and overall health of Copper River sockeye salmon may be related to 
inriver mortality. This work will inform fisheries management and provide insight 
into how harvest management might adapt to these changes in the future. 

#Objectives Related to Data

Objective 1: Describe body dimensions (particularly body length), migration energy 
use, reproductive investment, and gene expression related to stress for the mean 
sockeye salmon migrant in each run-timing group or population of Copper River sockeye 
salmon during 2021 and relate these measures to migration conditions in the river

Objective 2: Determine which factors explain success or failure in migration and 
reproduction based on tracking radio-tagged adult sockeye salmon during 2021 and 
relate success to fish characteristics and river conditions

#Narrative Summary of Data

This dataset represents various diverse sampling/analysis/methodological approaches. The PIs have 
determined 6, and authored scientific metadata according to ISO19110/ISO19115 standard.
