Description

This dataset lists the sources of information found in Isaac Newton's Principia Mathematica.

The dataset was compiled by going through the 1729 English translation of the Principia Mathematica. The 1729 English translation was based on the 1726 third edition in Latin. This data was then cross-referenced with available secondary literature (see https://isaacnewton.world/readings.html).

Each location and source is only listed once, even though Newton often refers to the same source or individual multiple times. Volume and page numbers refer to the 1729 English translation by Andrew Motte.

The dataset is available in as comma separated value and Excel spreadsheet. It includes latitude (decimal), longitude (decimal), date, location, name of source, text from the Principia, volume number, page number, and further information.
