Expectations towards the self-driving car: results from a survey of use-intentions and demand responses in the adult Danish population.

To support foresight on the uptake of autonomous vehicles and their impact upon the demand for road transport
a study of the Danish population expectations towards self-driving cars was conducted. In general the survey
participants were positive towards self-driving cars and focused on the potential gains. Most would expect to
drive more in a future with access to a self-driving car. A net increase in road traffic demand should be expected,
partly due to new user groups that are currently limited in their car use. The expectancy towards use of a selfdriving
car vary considerably by age groups, gender, technology interest, disability preventing from driving,
current travel distances, motorway driving, driving in congestion, and experiences with assisted driving. But the
willingness to pay is limited and lower costs will be important for the adoption of self-driving cars. Wider
application of assisted driving, successful trials, increasing congestion, as well as the technological orientation of
the younger generations may also contribute to future appreciation and adoption of self-driving cars.
