Abstract

Aim: The aim of the current study was to carry out the multidimensional assessment of temperament in obese individuals.

Method: 114 subjects, aged 18-76 (mean age 46.56±15.08), with the diagnosis of obesity were enrolled in the study. The diagnostic criterion was the BMI score over 30 points. Temperament was assessed by means of TEMPS-A and Cloninger’s TCI questionnaires.

Results: Compared to the results of normalization studies, obese subjects from our study displayed higher intensity of depressive, cyclothymic and anxious temperaments in TEMPS-A, as well as of harm avoidance and reward dependence in TCI. Male obese subjects showed significantly lower rates of irritable temperament in TEMPS-A, as well as higher rates of harm avoidance in TCI. Higher age was related to lower intensity of cyclothymia im TEMPS-A as well as lower reward dependence and self-transcendence in TCI. Higher self-transcendence was related to higher intensity of hyperthymic and lower intensity of irritbale temperament.

Conclusions: Results obtained in the present study indicate a possibility of higher intensity of cyclothymic, depressive, anxious as well as harm avoidance and reward dependence temperament traits in obese individuals. According to up to date studies, high intensity of above traits is also present in patients with affective disorders, which indicates the validity of further studies on relationships between these disorders.
