Summary

The objective of this study is the evaluation of exogenous surfactant therapy impact on short-term survival in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Retrospective analysis of 137 fatal ARDS cases has been conducted. The period from ARDS onset till fatal outcome in patients with conventional treatment was 2 (1-4) days, in patients with additional exogenous surfactant administration – 5 (3-10) days (p<0.001). The surfactant therapy was a significant predictor of surviving (HR=0.38; 95% CI 0.249-0.579; p<0.001). It has been concluded that exogenous surfactant therapy may increase short-term survival in ARDS patients.

Key words: ARDS, exogenous surfactant therapy.
