Description
Green nanoparticle synthesis has been achieved using environmentally acceptable plant extract and eco-friendly reducing and capping agents. The present study to determine the efficacies of synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using aqueous leaf extract of Feronia elephantum against the eggs of malaria vector, Anopheles stephensi , dengue vector, Aedes aegypti and filariasis vector, Culex quinquefasciatus. Eggs were exposed to varying concentrations of aqueous extract of F.elephantum and synthesized Ag NP for 24 h. Ag NP were rapidly synthesized using the leaf extract of F.elephantum and the formation of nanoparticles was observed within 6 h. After treatment, the eggs from each concentration were individually transferred to distilled water cups for hatching assessment after counting the eggs under microscope. Each experiment was replicated six times along with appropriate control. The hatch rates were assessed 48 h post – treatment. The aqueous leaf extract and AgNPs exerted 100% mortality (zero hatchability-12 to 18 hrs eggs) at 250, 300 and 350 μg/mL, and 60, 70 and 80 μg/mL, against An. stephensi, Ae.aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus, respectively. The results recorded from UV - vis spectrum, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy support the biosynthesis and characterization of AgNPs. This is the first report on ovicidal activity of the plant extract and synthesized AgNPs.
