Description
The article presents an overview of the studies dealing with designing off-shore gravity structures made of cylindrical shells filled with soil. The authors have studied the techniques of determining and calculating the permissible ultimate displacement for the structures taking into account the interaction with the foundation soil and identified criteria for the permissible ultimate displacements. The authors advise that, in addition to the general requirements for determining the permissible ultimate displacements and the functional purpose of the structure, there should be determined as well the permissible ultimate displacements of the foundation soil with the subsequent determination of the lowest (crucial) values. To determine the displacements for the foundation soil at an early stage of designing, it is advisable to use the data of the plate-bearing tests performed earlier for similar soil conditions. The beginning of the development of plastic deformation in the soil is proposed to be considered as a criteria of determining the permissible ultimate displacements of soil settlement.
