Description

Catchment connectivity is a crucial factor affecting the health of river ecosystems and water resource management. This study introduces and applies the Catchment Area-based Fragmentation Index (CAFI) to evaluate the connectivity of watersheds in China. Using the latest hydrological information, we generated the CAFI for the entire country. The results indicate varying degrees of connectivity fragmentation across Chinese basins, with significantly higher CAFI indices in the south, especially the Yangtze River. The index not only highlights physical connectivity issues within catchments but also reflects the impact of human activities on river ecosystems. The application of CAFI provides scientific evidence and decision support for catchment management and ecological restoration, promoting the sustainable development of catchment ecosystems. The findings of this study are essential for improving water resource management efficiency, protecting biodiversity, and maintaining ecological balance.
