Description

Located in the south-west of the Ivory Coast, the Lower Sassandra watershed is one of the main suppliers of export products. In this zone, human activities dangerously threaten the forest cover through perennial crops (export culture). Degradation of forest cover thus accelerates soil erosion. The present study aims to quantify, through GIS, the landscape dynamics and the evolution of land erosion at the selected test area of the Lower Sassandra watershed in 1986, 200 and 2014. The diachronic analysis of satellite images showed a profound change in land use, and this following a strong demographic pressure. The erosion of land caused by this disappearance of the canopy evolves proportionally with the latter. The loss of land is very high with average values ranging from 45.80t /ha/yr to 55.66t/ ha/yr over the study period.
