Description

In this chapter, I look at how algorithms in music making are internalised in the mind and in the body, including embodied aspects of performance and listening, and the link between action and perception. The analysis departs from the mind-body problem and the materiality of algorithms, on to algorithms as instruments, and cognitive science aspects on programming and algorithmic music. The roles of mental maps and models are discussed, as well as the embodiment of algorithms and their role in live performance and as augmentations of the mind, and the role of agency in the context of listening. A number of the author's works are used as examples throughout the text.
