Description

India is a fascinating country that has always attracted many western filmmakers. There are a thousand ways to understand India, to project oneself there, and to get into its skin. The country is a maelstrom of human, social, and spiritual contradictions, where it is humanly not possible to disentangle its skein. In order to give a glimpse of this complex reality and its dynamism, the view of filmmakers on the lifestyle and the diversity of this country has been proposed. It is a dream of the West: Many western filmmakers, including those from France, have had a desire to express themselves, often with talent... In this analysis of the films of five French directors, different aspects which constantly overlap in filmmaking have been explored. The aim of this research paper is to bring forth their insight into life and culture of India and to analyse their interpretation (of Indian society). An analysis of how filmmakers have accounted for the profound changes in Indian society through their perception of politics, religion, identity, urbanism, crafts or households has been done.
