Description

Background

The dataset contains data on soil properties and microplastic abundance in soil samples taken in the floodplains Langel-Merkenich, Poller Wiesen and Westhovener Aue (Cologne, Germany). They were analysed in the paper by M. Rolf, H. Laermanns, J. Horn, L. Kienzler, C. Pohl, G. Dierkes, S. Kernchen, C. Laforsch, M.G.J. Löder and C. Bogner, “Multi-method analysis of microplastic distribution by flood frequency and local topography in Rhine floodplains” https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2024.171927) published in Science of the Total Environment.

Technical info

Description of the dataset

The zipped folder

  • data.zip contains subfolders imagelab_data (contains microplastics data of the floodplain ML, PW and WA, the blanks and the results of FTIR data reading), pyrolyse (contains the raw data and also the results of data reading and wrangling) additional_data (weights of aliquots) and soil (data on soil texture and soil organic matter).

Technical info

Description of the code

The R notebooks *.Rmd contain the code to read and wrangle the FTIR and pyrolysis GC/MS microplastics data (FTIR: ML_Data_read.Rmd, PW_Data_read.Rmd, WA_Data_read.Rmd, Pyrolyse GC/MS: pyrolysis_analysis.Rmd), analyse and plot it (FTIR: Analysis_plots_MP_PW_WA_ML.Rmd and Supplement_FTIR.Rmd, Pyrolyse GC/MS: pyrolysis_analysis.Rmd; Correlation_plots_II.Rmd) and plot data on soil properties (soil_plots.Rmd).
