SMEs are seen as important actors of national and regional development in many countries. This is a panel  data set on economic, institutional and environmental drivers of SME development for 21 EU states (Austria, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain) during 2011-2020 .
