The Rock has not resigned: St. John Vianney and the Priesthood After Two Thousand Years
Authors/Creators
Description
What is the priesthood for, and what remains of it when its sacramental identity is obscured? Written on the Feast of St. John Vianney, this essay examines contemporary debates surrounding Catholic priesthood through the life of the Curé of Ars. It argues that proposals to separate preaching from sacramental ministry, to subordinate eternal realities to temporal concerns, and to marginalize the Eucharistic center of worship all arise from a common misunderstanding of the priesthood's sacramental nature. By placing current controversies within two millennia of ecclesial history, the essay contends that the Church's endurance rests not on institutional innovation but on the fidelity of priests who remain steadfast in the ministry entrusted to them by Christ.
