Visualizations of medium wave AM broadcaster carriers from data recorded during HamSCI's 2023 Festivals of Eclipse Ionospheric Science

Description

During the October 14, 2023 annular solar eclipse across the Americas, 13 HamSCI volunteers recorded the entire medium wave AM broadcast band (525-1705 kHz) using software defined radios (SDRs), from sites in Canada, the USA, Mexico and Portugal.    In addition, many participants made reference recordings of local sunrise and sunset periods on the day of the eclipse, as well as of the eclipse period on another day.

All of the resulting SDR files have been processed using Carrier Sleuth software, which enabled visualization of the AM broadcasters’ carrier frequencies over time, including any Doppler shift or spectral spreading, plus their signal strengths.  These visualization are in the form of 80Hz wide waterfall displays of all 117 domestic broadcast channels, which are spaced at 10kHz intervals across the medium wave band.

The Carrier Sleuth files are available here for download, along with software and introductory documents, describing how those files can be used for a first look at the data set, as well as instructions for obtaining the raw SDR data.

Notes

For introduction to the contents of this site, please read “2023 Solar Eclipse MW Recording Details.pdf”, which describes the location of participants as well as details about their data sets.  In addition, it will direct the user to the Carrier Sleuth files and to each participant’s raw data.

“CarrierSleuthWindowsMay2024.zip” is a copy of Carrier Sleuth software (ready to run, once unzipped), courtesy of its developer, Chris Smolinski, W3HFU.  The most recent version of the software may be obtained at https://www.blackcatsystems.com/software/medium_wave_carrier_display_app.html

“CarrierSleuthOverview.pdf” provides a detailed introduction to Carrier Sleuth software, including instructions for deriving carrier signal strength vs. time for any slice of spectrum to a resolution of 0.1Hz.
