    "description": "<p>Reference materials (RMs) are vital tools in the validation of methods used to detect environmental pollutants. Microplastics, a relatively new environmental pollutant, require a variety of complex approaches to address their presence in environmental samples. Both interlaboratory comparison (ILC) studies and RMs are essential to support the validation of methods used in microplastic analysis. Presented here are results of quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) performed on two types of candidate microplastic RMs: dissolvable gelatin capsules and soda tablets. These RMs have been used to support numerous international ILC studies in recent years (2019&ndash;2022). Dissolvable capsules containing polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE), and polystyrene (PS), in different size fractions from 50 to 1000&nbsp;&micro;m, were produced for one ILC study, obtaining relative standard deviation (RSD) from 0 to 24%. The larger size fraction allowed for manual addition of particles to the capsules, yielding 0% error and 100% recovery during QA/QC. Dissolvable capsules were replaced by soda tablets in subsequent ILC studies and recovery test exercises because they were found to be a more reliable carrier for microplastic RMs. Batches of soda tablets were produced containing different single and multiple polymer mixtures, i.e., PE, PET, PS, PVC, polypropylene (PP), and polycarbonate (PC), with RSD ranging from 8 to 21%. Lastly, soda tablets consisting of a mixture of PE, PVC, and PS (125&ndash;355&nbsp;&micro;m) were produced and used for recovery testing during pretreatment of environmental samples. These had an RSD of 9%. Results showed that soda tablets and capsules containing microplastics&thinsp;&gt;50&nbsp;&micro;m could be produced with sufficient precision for internal recovery tests and external ILC studies. Further work is required to optimize this method for smaller microplastics (&lt; 50&nbsp;&micro;m) because variation was found to be too large during QA/QC. Nevertheless, this approach represents a valuable solution addressing many of the challenges associated with validating microplastic analytical methods.</p>",

            "page": "<p>Developing harmonised methods for measuring the presence of plastic, incl. microplastics, in nature is important to ensure that environmental policy is sufficiently targeted and give us the ability to adjust measures as needed. At the European level this is important for the implementation of EU directives which include requirements for measurable reduction of plastics and microplastics in the environment.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>This Zenodo community, curated by <a href=\"https://www.euroqcharm.eu/en/\">EUROqCHARM</a>, an EU Horizon 2020 project, is set up as a platform for exchange of information and coordination of efforts around methodological harmonization and standardization.&nbsp;</p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>EUROqCHARM Objectives</strong><br />\r\nThe overall objective of EUROqCHARM is to develop optimised, validated and harmonised methods for monitoring and assessment of plastics in the environment, as well as blueprints for standards and recommendations for policy and legislation.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>EUROqCHARM will co-develop these methods and recommendations using a multi-stakeholder approach, whereby the project is structured to bring together relevant stakeholders to enable cooperation and participation in the dialogue, decision making and implementation of solutions. This step is critical, as the necessary developments require the engagement and collaboration of researchers and various stakeholders with a thorough understanding of the complexity arising from the wide array of polymer types and particle sizes dispersed in different environmental matrices. To this end, the EUROqCHARM partners, advisory board members and associated stakeholders include all relevant research areas (natural sciences: marine, surface, groundwater, drinking and waste water, soil, air; analytical chemistry etc.), industry (instrument manufacturers, plastic producers and commercial laboratories), regulators &ndash; United Nations (UN), EU and national level, standardisation bodies &ndash; European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) and International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), professional associations and societies - e.g., Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), policy makers (UN, EU and national level) and national and international Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). This sets EUROqCHARM in a unique position to coordinate the validation of the available methods and production of harmonised protocols for assessing plastic contamination that are also accessible to less-developed countries.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>More specifically, EUROqCHARM&rsquo;s specific objectives are:</p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Identification of state-of-the-art methods for sample collection, sample preparation and analysis of plastics (nano-, micro-, macro-) in four different environmental matrices (water, soil/sediment, air and biota) currently in use by research institutes, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and other relevant research units through a systematic review of current practices amongst researchers, institutions and international working groups. (achieved through Work Package 1)</li>\r\n\t<li>Identification of state-of-the-art protocols, recommendations and guidelines, which are currently being used for monitoring and assessment of plastics in different environmental matrices by European member states, through a systematic review of current practices of international working groups and institutions. (achieved through Work Package 2)</li>\r\n\t<li>Harmonising sample preparation, analysis and data reporting formats as recommendations for standards through validation and quality assurance of identified candidate standard methods in a European-wide intercalibration exercise, using newly prepared certified reference materials and quality assured and controlled studies. (achieved through Work Package 2)</li>\r\n\t<li>Harmonising monitoring methods that can be used by stakeholders to formulate and implement policy and legislation at European and international levels, through the development of recommended guidelines.             "curation_policy": "<h2>Curation policy</h2>\n<p>The EU Open Research Repository serves as a repository for research outputs (data, software, posters, presentations, publications, etc) which have been funded under an EU research funding programme such as Horizon Europe, Euratom or earlier Framework Programmes.</p>\n<p>The community is managed by CERN on behalf of the European Commission.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://about.zenodo.org/policies/\">Zenodo&rsquo;s general policies</a> and <a href=\"https://about.zenodo.org/terms/\">Terms of Use</a> apply to all content.</p>\n<h3>Scope</h3>\n<p>The EU Open Research Repository accepts all digital research objects which is a research output stemming from one of EU&rsquo;s research and innovation funding programmes. The funding programmes currently include:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Horizon Europe (including ERC, MSCA), earlier Framework Programmes (eg Horizon 2020) as well as Euratom.</p>\n</li>\n</ul>\n<p>In line with the principle as open as possible, as closed as necessary both public and restricted content is accepted. See note on how <a href=\"https://about.zenodo.org/infrastructure/\">Zenodo handles restricted content</a>.</p>\n<h3>Content submission</h3>\n<p>EU programme beneficiaries are eligible to submit content to the community. The community supports three types of content submissions:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Submission via an EU Project Community (through user interface or programmatic APIs).</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Submission directly to the EU Open Research Repository.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Automated harvesting from existing Zenodo content.</p>\n</li>\n</ul>\n<h4>Project community (preferred)</h4>\n<p>A representative of an EU project may request an EU Project Community and invite other project participants as members of the community. The project community is linked to one or more European Commission grants. All records in the project community are automatically integrated into the EU Open Research Repository immediately upon acceptance into the project community.&nbsp;</p>\n<h4>Direct submission</h4>\n<p>Any user may submit a record directly to the EU Open Research Repository. The submission will be moderated by Zenodo staff for compliance with the minimal required metadata requirements and its correctness.</p>\n<h4>Automated harvesting</h4>\n<p>Records found among Zenodo&rsquo;s existing content will on a regular basis automatically be integrated if they are found to comply with the requirements. The submissions through this method are integrated into the EU Open Research Repository with delay in a fully automated way.</p>\n<h3>Descriptive information</h3>\n<h4>Minimal metadata requirements</h4>\n<p>Records in the EU Open Research Repository are required to comply with the following minimal metadata requirements:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Visibility: Both public and restricted (with or without embargo and/or access request)</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Resource types: All resource types.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Licenses: Public and embargoed records MUST specify a license. The chosen license SHOULD be compliant with the Horizon Europe open science requirements (see <a href=\"/communities/eu/pages/open-science\">Open Science in Horizon Europe</a>)</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Funding information: Records MUST specify at least one grant from the European Commission.</p>\n</li>\n<li>Journal articles: Records MUST specify at the publishing venue (e.g. the journal the article was published in).</li>\n<li>\n<p>Creators: Creators SHOULD be identified with a persistent identifier (e.g. ORCID, GND, &hellip;), and affiliations SHOULD be identified with a persistent identifier (e.g. ROR, ISNI, &hellip;)</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>Subjects: Records SHOULD specify one or more fields of science from the <a href=\"https://op.europa.eu/en/web/eu-vocabularies/euroscivoc\">European Science Vocabulary</a>.</p>\n</li>\n</ul>\n<p>These metadata requirements comes from the related open science requirements in Horizon Europe which are detailed in each project's grant agreement.</p>\n<h3>Review &amp; moderation</h3>\n<p>All submissions undergo automated curation checks for compliance with the policy.
