Ribbon map of the Mekong

  • 1. Aalto University

Description

This is a ribbon map of the Mekong river, inspired by 19th century river length comparisons and the Father of Waters, a ribbon map for Mississippi steam boat captains. The map "straightens" the Mekong river into an elongated map by cutting and re-orienting the river course to fit within the bounds. The map starts from the river mouth in Vietnam at the bottom of the map, and reaches the source of the river in Tibet at the top. It contains many interesting features and pieces of information on the culture and geography of the region.

There are two versions of the map with small differences. The main difference between them is size and the inclusion of an elevation model. Version 1 is approximately 550 cm in length and 19 cm in length, and does not contain an elevation model. Version 2 is 650mm in length and 40cm in width, and shows an elevation model along the river.

Note that Adobe Acrobat reader is not able to open the larger version 2 of the map, because it exceeds the maximum page size. Other PDF-readers do work, however.

If you have any comments on the contents, or wish to add something, please let me know at marko@markokallio.fi. This is the first "finished" version but I'm keen to keep working with it.
