Study of potato (Solanum tuberosum) resistance to potato blight (Phytophthora infestans) mediated by the Rpi-Smira2 gene

This doctoral thesis was prepared at the University of Ljubljana and was aimed to determine the resistance of potato (Solanum tuberosum) to potato blight (Phytophthora infestans) mediated by the Rpi-Smira2 gene. Through manual crosses between susceptible potato cultivars and the resistant cultivar 'Sárpo Mira', a population of F1 hybrids was obtained. Genetic markers were used to select hybrids with only the Rpi-Smira2/R8 gene. The study sheds light on the resistance mechanism of Rpi-Smira2/R8 gene and offers insights for breeding programs aiming at sustainable agriculture.
