This dataset includes equivalent soil mass carbon and nitrogen stocks for two soil organic matter fractions (particulate and mineral-associated organic matter) from three soil layers (Oa, surface A horizon, subsurface A horizon) in subplots with and without understory ericoid mycorrhizal (ErM) shrubs across gradients of varying overstory arbuscular (AM) versus ectomycorrhizal (EcM) tree relative basal area in three temperate forest sites in the northeastern U.S. 

In addition, this dataset includes total soil organic matter, microbially-available carbon, and active microbial biomass stocks for each of the three soil depths.  


## Description of the Data and file structure

This dataset contains two tabs. The first ("Data by soil layer") contains equivalent soil mass stocks and associated data for each of the three soil layers. The second ("Data by subplot") contains equivalent soil mass stocks and associated data at the subplot level (i.e. summed across the three equivalent soil mass layers). 

"Data by soil layer" tab: 

site: One of three forest stands from which soils were collected at a forest in northeastern Connecticut, USA. 

plot: Plot number within each site. We collected samples from six 10-m radius plots within each of the three sites

subplot: We collected samples from two 1-m radius subplots nested within each plot. 
    L = "Laurel." Subplot with the ErM shrub Kalmia latifolia
    N = "No Laurel." Subplot without the ErM shrub Kalmia latifolia

soil_layer: We analyzed samples from three equivalent soil mass layers within each subplot. 
    Oa = the organic equivalent soil mass layer (~2.5 kg soil m-2)
    D1 = the surface mineral equivalent soil mass layer (~37 kg soil m-2) 
    D2 = the subsurface mineral equivalent soil mass layer (~126 kg soil m-2)

unique_ID: Unique combination of site, plot, subplot, and soil layer

GWCper: Gravimetric water content; percent soil moisture on a mass basis

SOMper: Loss on ignition; percent soil organic matter

Cmin: Carbon mineralization concentration (units = ug g dry wt soil-1 14 days-1), which is a measure of microbially-available carbon 

SIR: Substrate induced respiration (units = ug CO2 g dry wt soil-1 h-1), which is a measure of active microbial biomass

Depth_upper_cm: Upper depth of the sampled soil layer (cm). Used with the SimpleESM function to calculate sampling depth for the equivalent 
soil mass stock calculations.

Depth_upper_cm: Lower depth of the sampled soil layer (cm). Used with the SimpleESM function to calculate sampling depth for the equivalent soil mass stock calculations.

BD: Soil bulk density (g cm-3)

POC: g of carbon in particulate organic matter per kg total dry soil mass

PON: g of nitrogen in particulate organic matter per kg total dry soil mass

MAOC: g of carbon in mineral-associated organic matter per kg total dry soil mass

MAON: g of nitrogen in mineral-associated organic matter per kg total dry soil mass

Total_C: g of carbon per kg total dry soil mass

Total_N: g of nitrogen per kg total dry soil mass
