AUTOMATE - AN EMPATHIC FIRST-AID COMMUNICATION SYSTEM TO REDUCE THE BYSTANDER EFFECT IN CAR ACCIDENTS

  • 1. University of Salzburg

Description

The bystander efect (i.e. theory that individuals are less likely to ofer help in presence of others) is a common problem especially,
when in cases of car accidents. In this paper, we present a frst-aid communication system (AutoMate) that shall increase empathy of
nearby drivers and support them in helping a car accident victim. Based on expert interviews, we designed and implemented a proto-typical AutoMate system and evaluated it in a user study (N=8) in a car simulator. Results show the potential of such a system towards a more empathic behavior. We discuss challenges and opportunities for the design of in-vehicle information systems addressing bystander efects.
