# Sectoral water use responses to droughts and heatwaves ............................................................................... ## About The datasets here ensure the reproducibility of the calculations and analysis of sectoral water use responses during droughts and heatwaves, including download links of the sectoral water use datasets, input datasets and final results. ............................................................................... ## Content - inputs - gsim-grdc_discharges.csv - datasets_global-scale_aquastat.csv - datasets_country-scale_usgs.csv - datasets_country-scale_useia.xlsx - datasets_local-scale.xlsx - shp/aquastat_countries_30arcmin.shp - shp/usgs_counties_30arcmin.shp - dhe - heatwaves_W5E5_30arcmin_monthly_1990-2010_p=90%.nc - heatwaves_W5E5_30arcmin_monthly_1990-2019_p=90%.nc - droughts_GSIM-GRDC_30arcmin_monthly_1990-2010_p=20%_gaps=25%.nc - droughts_GSIM-GRDC_30arcmin_monthly_1990-2019_p=20%_gaps=25%.nc - droughts_CCI-GLEAM_30arcmin_monthly_1990-2010_p=20%_pearson=40%.nc - droughts_CCI-GLEAM_30arcmin_monthly_1990-2019_p=20%_pearson=40%.nc - compounds_W5E5-GSIM-GRDC_30arcmin_monthly_1990-2010.nc - compounds_W5E5-GSIM-GRDC_30arcmin_monthly_1990-2019.nc - compounds_W5E5-GSIM-GRDC-CCI-GLEAM_30arcmin_monthly_1990-2010.nc - analysis - global_huang_cons_dom_1990-2010.csv - global_huang_cons_elec_1990-2010.csv - global_huang_cons_irr_1990-2010.csv - global_huang_cons_liv_1990-2010.csv - global_huang_cons_mfg_1990-2010.csv - global_huang_withd_dom_1990-2010.csv - global_huang_withd_elec_1990-2010.csv - global_huang_withd_irr_1990-2010.csv - global_huang_withd_liv_1990-2010.csv - global_huang_withd_mfg_1990-2010.csv - global_aquastat_withd_1990-2019.xlsx - country_usgs_withd_1990-2019.xlsx - country_useia_withd_elec-cooling_2014-2019.csv - country_useia_prod_elec-electricity_2001-2019.csv - local_withd_dom-mfg.csv ............................................................................... ## inputs Folder '/inputs' contains the input files used for the calculations of the sectoral water responses during extreme events. Input files are: - gsim-grdc_discharges.csv: GSIM and GRDC combined dataset - datasets_global-scale_aquastat.csv: AQUASTAT water withdrawal data at country level - datasets_country-scale_usgs.csv: USGS water withdrawal data at county level - datasets_country-scale_useia.xlsx: EIA data of power plants (cooling water withdrawals and net electricity production) - datasets_local-scale.xlsx: compilation of city-scale water use records Other datasets used were: - Global reconstructed water use data for 1971-2010 v2.0 (Huang et al. (2018), https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1209296) - WFDE5 over land merged with ERA5 over the ocean v2.0: Daily Maximum Near- Surface Air Temperature (Lange et al. (2021), https://data.isimip.org/datasets/38d4a8f4-12e8-44ff-afe3-0c7ce0e0dad6/) - European Space Agency - Climate Change Initiative: Soil Moisture v6.1 (Dorigo et al. (2017), https://www.esa-soilmoisture-cci.org/index.php?q=dataregistration) - Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model v3.5a: Root-zone soil moisture (Martens et al. (2017), https://www.gleam.eu/) - The Global Streamflow Indices and Metadata Archive - Part 1: Station catalog and Catchment boundary (Do et al. (2018), https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.887477) ............................................................................... ## dhe Folder '/dhe' contains the resulting datasets of identified extreme events (droughts, heatwaves and compound events). File names contain tags indicating the parameters considered during calculation. Datasets are netcdf files that indicate non-occurrence (denoted by '0') or occurrence of an extreme event: 1 if independent event dataset or 1 to 7 if compound event dataset (see manuscript for more information). ............................................................................... ## analysis Folder '/analysis' contains the resulting evaluation of sectoral water use responses during droughts, heatwaves and compound events. These output files include spatial locations (i.e., longitude and latitude) and mean percentile values of water used during the occurrence of a particular extreme event. File names include the water dimension, sector and period of interest evaluated, except for local-scale results, which varies by city and data availability. These results were used to generate the figures in the manuscript. ............................................................................... ## Contact For further questions, please contact Gabriel Cardenas (g.a.cardenasbelleza@uu.nl). ............................................................................... ## References Huang, Z., Hejazi, M., Li, X., Tang, Q., Vernon, C., Leng, G., Liu, Y., Döll, P., Eisner, S., Gerten, D., Hanasaki, N., & Wada, Y.
