Urban Sprawl Mapping in The Area of Bathinda City

Description

Assessing the effects of increasing land use on the environment, ecology, and ecosystems requires mapping the extent of urban sprawl and tracking temporal changes. Analyzing the growth, pattern, and breadth of sprawl involves using GIS and remote sensing data. Bathinda’s base map was created using an existing map and the theme maps were created using a GIS technique. The physical growth of Bathinda city from the year 1991 to 2022 has been studied with the help of Bhuvan Data (built map generated), Google Earth and using GIS techniques. The built-up area increased from 350 ha to 4424 ha i.e., 7.91 per cent within a time span of thirty-two years from 1991 to 2022. With increase in built up area the green cover has drastically decreased. Agriculture i.e. green pasture area decreased from 2363.43 to 1610.61 i.e. 31.9%.
