Generative Design in Digital Archives
Description
This talk focuses on how design can embrace a plurality of perspectives in displaying data and thus bolster the interpretative activity of research in digital cultural archives.
Max Frischknecht is a designer, developer, and digital humanist. In his presentation he will touch upon themes in his current dissertation work creating visualizations and interfaces for the critical exploration of the Atlas of Swiss Folklore, a collection of over 300 maps that depict cultural patterns of Switzerland between 1930 and 1940. His research is part of the Participatory Knowledge Practices in Analogue and Digital Image Archives, a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (2021–2025). At MIT Max is a visiting student in Comparative Media Studies, working with Kurt Fendt.
